This type of motor policy will provide an 'all risks' level of protection for policyholder and vehicle*. Each insurer will deliver fully comprehensive car insurance cover with slight variations. For this reason it is sensible practice to shop around and make an informed choice.

Compare Comprehensive Car Insurance Quotes

If your vehicle is valued at over £5,000 then, by law you must have comprehensive cover, thus the majority of motor policies sold in the UK are of this type. Exclusions will vary according to your provider but may include (for example) legal fees, breakdown cover, windscreen damage, and medical fees. The excess can also vary and is agreed between you and your insurer.

Fully comprehensive motor insurance will cover everything as in a standard Third Party Insurance (TPFT) policy with the addition of Accidental Damage. This is defined as damage to insured's vehicle, which includes malicious damage. Comprehensive Motor Insurance Policies usually cover:

  • Liability for injuries to other people, including passengers
  • Liability for damage to other people?s property
  • Liability of passengers for accidents caused by them
  • Liability arising from the use of a caravan or trailer, while attached to the car
  • Fire damage and/or theft
  • Accidental damage to your own car
  • Medical expenses necessarily incurred, up to a stated limit
  • Loss of or damage to personal effects in the car, up to a stated limit.
  • Driving other cars is an extension that can be found on some policies.

Personal accident benefit cover is defined as - certain amounts paid in the event of the death or specific permanent disablement of the policyholder (and sometimes his or her spouse or family member).

Comprehensive Motor Policy Options and Extras
Extras you can add to your comprehensive car insurance policy to tailor it to your needs. Nearly all leading motor insurers will offer a range of Additional Policy Extras, enabling you to tailor your fully comp. policy to suit your motoring needs.
