Motability

The HomeApproved review of the Motability organisation seeks to inform and assist motorists who are interested in discovering and learning about this national charity (registered charity no: 299745).

Motability was originally set up on the initiative of the Government in 1977, to assist disabled people with their mobility needs. The organisation directs and oversees the Motability Scheme which enables disabled people to obtain a car, powered wheelchair or scooter simply by using their government-funded mobility allowances.

In the UK, over 1.7 million disabled people qualify for the Higher Rate Mobility Component of Disability Living Allowance and over 16,000 qualify for the War Pensioners' Mobility Supplement. What a disabled person chooses to do with that money is entirely up to them. Currently, some 450,000 disabled people have chosen to have their allowances paid to the Scheme to meet the cost of having a car, powered wheelchair or scooter through contract hire or hire purchase schemes.

How do I get a Car?
If you are eligible for the Scheme, all you need to do is visit your local Motability dealers to try out some of the cars. There are over 4,000 dealerships across the UK and each one has a dedicated Motability specialist that will guide you through the process. Once you have chosen a car, your dealer will complete the application for you online at the dealership. The same dealership will also arrange your servicing and maintenance during your lease.

Am I eligible for the Motability Scheme?
Are you in receipt of either the:

1. Higher Rate Mobility Component or the Disability Living Allowance
2. War Pensioners Mobility Supplement

How and where do I make an application?
You will have been given a Certificate of entitlement for the allowance. Alternatively you can contact the Department for Works and Pension or the Veterans Agency to confirm.

Motability and Pass Plus
Young drivers trained through the Motability PASS PLUS programme have 42% fewer serious insurance claims, new research shows. The drivers, who have completed the free six-week training course provided for Motability by the AA driving school, also experience fewer accidents than other young drivers.
