The MIB has the objective of reducing the number instances related to uninsured driving. The Motor Insurers Bureau was established in 1946 as a private company limited by guarantee for the purpose of entering into agreements with the Government to compensate the victims of negligent uninsured and untraced motorists.

Every insurer underwriting compulsory UK car insurance is obliged, by virtue of the Road Traffic Act 1988, to be a member of MIB and to contribute to its funding.

Uninsured Accident Claims
To make a claim under the Uninsured or Untraced Drivers' Agreements this may be done by completing the MIB Claim Form which can be obtained from the Submit a Claim section of the MIB web site. Claims may be submitted direct by a claimant or through a solicitor or other appointed representative.

The Motor Insurers' Bureau is a fund of last resort and as such will consider claims for property damage and injury where compensation cannot be claimed from another source. Advice may also be provided by the local Citizens' Advice Bureau.

Contact your Insurer
Your insurance policy requires all accidents to be reported and your insurers may be able to trace the other party's insurers. Your insurer also has access to the Motor Insurers' Database which may contain details of the motorist's insurers.

Motor Insurers' Information Centre (MIIC)
The Motor Insurers Information Centre (MIIC) is a division of MIB and controls the Motor Insurance Database and also acts as the information centre under the 4th European Directive on Motor Insurance. This organisation was established by the insurance industry to oversee, on their behalf, the development and ongoing management of the Motor Insurance Database (MID). This database is already a key tool in the crusade against the crime of uninsured driving, with details of every insured vehicle now held on the MID.
