The RAC was the first motoring organisation to introduce uniformed car breakdown patrols in 1901 and roadside emergency telephone boxes in 1912. In 1999 Lex Service plc purchased the company's Motoring Services and subsequently renamed itself RAC plc in September 2002.

There is a wide variety of RAC breakdown cover insurance policies available to suit all budgets. RAC policies come in five guises, each with an enhanced level of protection, features and benefits. UK motorists can select from either basic roadside, or solution 1, 2, 3, or 4.

RAC Roadside cover delivers protection for roadside assistance providing your car is at least a quarter of a mile from your home. If you have a breakdown and the car can’t be fixed at the roadside, they will transport the vehicle to an approved garage where available. Accident help and advice is also available should you suffer a road accident.

The highest level of protection is delivered by RAC Solution 4. Incorporating all of the benefits of the lesser policies, plus onward travel. If your vehicle cannot be fixed locally within a reasonable time, the company will transport your vehicle and up to seven passengers to any UK destination. Alternatively, they will take your car to any UK destination and will arrange for a replacement vehicle for up to three days whilst your vehicle is being repaired; or overnight accommodation; or onward travel by taxi or plane up to a maximum value of £150 per head or £500 for a group, whichever is less.

RAC Bespoke European Assistance breakdown cover is also available for short trips of up to 2 days or multiple trips within one year.
