Young Driver Fatalities

Latest figures on the rising number of fatalities among young drivers should give more than just a pause for thought for those youngsters considering driving drunk! Drink-drive deaths are at their highest since 1992, claiming 590 lives last year (2005). The death rate among young drivers has doubled in the past five years.

Cutting the Drink-Drive Limit
UK Government advisors have suggested that the drive-drive limit should be cut for younger motorists to curb the number of alcohol-related deaths on the roads. A report by the Advisory Council on the Misuse of Drugs has called for the limit to be reduced for drivers under the age of 25. The proposal to cut the level from 80mg per 100mg of blood to just 50mg would put many over the limit after just one pint of lager or one glass of wine.

The call to reduce the alcohol limit was strongly backed by the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents. However according to a Government Transport Minister there are no plans to change the limit 'for young drivers or anyone else'.
